Show
business has never seen a group quite like The Coasters. They
occupy a special niche in the music field. Because of their
style and approach, they are in a class of their own. No
wonder The Coasters are labeled “THE CLOWN PRINCES OF
ROCK AND ROLL”.
Nothing in the world is more difficult to achieve than a long
term career in the record business by being funny. But
The Coasters have had a long, unbroken string of hits containing
humerous materials. In this respect, The Coasters are certainly
unique.
Their first hit, “Down In Mexico”, was released
in 1956 and sold approximately 500,000 copies. In 1957,
they hit the charts with a double-sided smash, “Young
Blood” and “Searchin’” which each sold
1,000,000 copies. This put The Coasters on the road to
a long career.
In 1958, they hit the charts again with “Yakety Yak”
and “Charlie Brown” which stayed on Billboard’s
top ten list for several weeks. From then on it was hit
after hit with “Poison Ivy”, “Along Came Jones”,
“Little Egypt”, “Love Potion Number 9”,
“Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart” and “Baby
That’s Rock And Roll”.
It’s been over forty years and The Coasters are still
going strong under the leadership of Carl Gardner, the original
lead singer and founder of The Coasters, who still performs
with the group.
On January 21, 1987, The Coasters was the first group to be
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Carl Gardner
was also presented with a plaque from President Clinton in honor
of The Coasters’ 45th Anniversary.
Though often imitated, The Coasters have never been duplicated,
and continue to do what they do best – ENTERTAIN!!.
