Her
time has come!
On April 14, 1963, an unknown 16-year old walked into one of
the most prestigious recording studios in Manhattan. The
musicians were already in place, brought there by the revered
Quincy Jones. So far nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
The unknown 16-year old went over the charts with Mr. Jones. As
she had never been to a recording session before and had never
seen music charts before, this took some time. The musicians
waited patiently. So far nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Another
one-time-wonder sent over by the record company they assumed. Ah,
well. They were getting paid, weren’t they? And
to work with Quincy Jones was an opportunity none of them ever
bypassed.
The unknown 16-year old went and stood in front of the microphone. The
musicians immediately snapped into “ready”. So
far nothing seemed out of the ordinary. LESLEY GORE BEGAN
TO SING.
She could place a slight trill-turn in her voice, followed by
an after-vibrato that made her sound so unique. She seemed
to find an almost invisible fraction between the beats, almost
like a jazz singer. She sang about the pain and disappointment
of young love.
With Lesley Gore, the music soared and the lyrics hit the heart
with the force of a nuclear explosion.
They bought her records by the millions.
The fans started calling her the “Princess of Song”. So
did the industry.
